Volvo Trucks Launches Next-Generation Safety Systems to Protect Pedestrians and Cyclists
Volvo Trucks Announces the Launch of Two New Safety Systems Designed to Protect Vulnerable Road Users, Such as Pedestrians and Cyclists, Reinforcing the Brand’s Commitment to Its Long-Term Vision: Reducing to Zero the Number of Accidents Involving Volvo Trucks.
Innovation in Active Safety: Protection for Cyclists in Urban Areas
Among the new features is the Active Side Collision Avoidance Support system, which now includes an active braking function. This system uses radar sensors to detect approaching cyclists and, in addition to warning the driver, it can automatically brake the truck to avoid collisions when turning towards the passenger side.
“Trucks are involved in 15% of fatal road accidents, and urban traffic represents a challenge even for the most experienced drivers,” says Anna Wrige Berling, Traffic and Product Safety Director at Volvo Trucks. “This system, focused on protecting cyclists in urban environments, is one of our most recent innovations and brings us closer to our long-term goal: zero accidents involving Volvo trucks.”
This system will be available for order starting November 2024 on Volvo FH, FM, and FMX models in all global markets.
Next-Generation Emergency Braking: A Decade Ahead of Legislation
Another highlight is the Collision Warning with Emergency Brake system, which has received significant upgrades. First introduced in 2012, this system is now capable of detecting, warning, and automatically braking not only for other vehicles but also for pedestrians and cyclists.
The system already meets the strictest standards of European legislation for advanced emergency braking systems (AEBS), which will not come into force until 2028. Furthermore, it exceeds these regulations by covering more traffic scenarios than required.
“We are pleased to see that legal requirements align with our vision of zero accidents,” comments Anna Wrige Berling. “However, at Volvo, we do not wait for legislation – we continue to innovate to go beyond legal requirements and achieve our ambitious goals.”
Starting in 2025, this system will be standard equipment in Europe on all FH, FM, and FMX series trucks and will be available as an option in global markets.
Commitment to Safety and Sustainability
These new systems reaffirm Volvo Trucks’ commitment to leading the industry in road safety, protecting both drivers and vulnerable road users, while moving towards a future with zero accidents.
